Your NHS Record Doesn't Follow You

Your GP record is the closest thing you have to a lifelong health record: decades of consultations, prescriptions, referral letters and test results. Released raw, it arrives as one enormous file: hundreds of pages, garbled software exports, and, for anything before digitisation, handwritten notes almost nobody can read.

The NHS App shows only a fraction of it, and stops being useful once you deregister. No system transfers your history to a doctor in Spain, Australia, or anywhere else: your new doctor starts from zero, and "just take a printout" hands them a pile they can't realistically use.

Timing matters too. While you're registered with a UK GP, requesting your record is straightforward. After you leave it's still possible, but slower, and one more thing to manage from another country and time zone. The easy moment to sort it is before you fly.

What You Receive

Your complete GP record exactly as your practice released it, alongside a set of documents written from it in plain English: your health story, what's being managed now, a clinical timeline, and a referenced summary, with every significant fact citing the page it came from. Handwritten notes are transcribed into readable text.

Authorise the Request

You sign a letter of authority and we request your full record from your GP practice. Already hold your record? Forward it and skip the wait.

Your GP Releases Your Record

Practices often respond within a week or two, and legally have up to a month. We handle the follow-ups and chasing.

We Organise and Write Your Pack

Handwriting transcribed, everything organised and checked against the source, every significant fact referenced to the original page.

You Receive Files You Keep Forever

Yours to store, take with you, and use in any country. We securely delete our copy after delivery.

Easiest Started Before You Fly

Records requests have a legal response window, and organising and checking your pack takes time on top: starting around eight weeks before departure means you leave with everything in hand. But it's not a deadline. Delivery is digital, so if the process finishes after you've moved, your pack simply reaches you abroad. And if you've already left, the process still works: see below.

Already left the UK?

We can still help. If you were registered with a GP practice in England, your record doesn't disappear when you deregister: requests are handled by NHS England's records support service (Primary Care Support England), which accepts subject access requests from formerly registered patients living overseas and can respond to an address abroad. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have their own route, and we'll identify the right one for where you were registered.

Nothing about the service assumes you're in the UK. Everything runs on email and secure transfer, and delivery is digital, so it works the same from Sydney as from Surrey.

Questions People Moving Abroad Ask

My records are split across countries. Can you still help?

We obtain your UK GP record, which should include the history transferred between your UK practices. Records held by overseas providers are outside what we can request, but if you hold copies, we can organise them alongside your UK record so everything lives in one place.

Can I do this after I've left the UK?

Yes: see "Already left the UK?" above. Records of deregistered patients are requested through NHS England's records support service rather than directly from a practice, so allow some extra time, but the right to your record doesn't end when your registration does.

Can I do it myself for free?

Yes. Requesting your own record costs nothing, and we publish a free guide showing exactly how. What we add is everything after the request: the chasing, the transcription of handwritten pages, and the organised, referenced pack you can actually use.

Is my data safe?

One person handles your record from start to finish, and our copy is securely deleted after delivery: you keep it, we don't. Full details on the Security & Data Protection page.
